Powerful 6.5 magnitude earthquake rattles New Zealand

Aug 16 NZ
August 16, 2013 – NEW ZEALAND – A 6.5-magnitude earthquake has struck south of New Zealand’s capital Wellington, sending panicked workers and residents into the streets just weeks after a similar tremor struck the city. The quake hit 10 kilometres south-east of the town of Seddon at a depth of eight kilometres and has been followed by at least seven aftershocks, all measuring more than magnitude 4.4. So far, there have been no reports of injuries or major damage to buildings. There was no specific threat of a widespread tsunami, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre. The main tremor was originally reported as 6.0-magnitude by NZ GeoNet. The US Geological Survey (USGS) measured the quake as 6.8-magnitude. The quake was later downgraded to a 6.5. The University and business district were evacuated. Local reports said the quake was felt as far away as Gisborne, Auckland and Hamilton.
The tremor caused a violent jolt in Wellington, where office workers dived for cover under their desks. There were reports of power cuts to areas of the South Island, and Wellington’s airport was briefly closed to check the runway for damage. Wellington’s airport was briefly closed to check the runway for damage. Train services were also stopped in case rails had buckled in the quake, but police said they had received no reports of significant injury or damage. Lifts were out of action in some office buildings and, as the aftershocks continued, many businesses sent their workers home early on Friday afternoon, causing large traffic jams in the capital. “This area in particular is very active in the last couple of months. This is a continuation of that activity,’ a seismologist from Geoscience Australia said, noting that a 6.5-magnitude quake in the same area on July 21 had caused damage. There have been hundreds of aftershocks since the July quake, with residents fearing a repeat of a devastating quake that hit Christchurch in February 2011, killing 185 people. New Zealand is on the boundary of the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates, forming part of the so-called “Ring of Fire”, and experiences up to 15,000 tremors a year. –

As the Egyptian government attempts to disband supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, a wave of devastating violence has swept through the country. The AP has reported that 638 people have been confirmed killed and nearly 4,000 are injured. It’s now being uncovered that much of this violence is being committed against Christians and their institutions. This morning on radio, Glenn gave his listeners a rundown of the institutions that have been attacked and what is happening to the Christian Egyptians as their nation unwinds into chaos — something the mainstream media has been deafeningly silent on. The President gave a statement on the issue on Thursday, in which he stated: “The United States strongly condemns the steps that have been taken by Egypt’s interim government and security forces,” Obama said. “We deplore violence against citizens.” Unfortunately, it’s not simply the “interim government” that is engaging in serious violence. It’s his so-called “nonviolent” pals that he helped initially win office, the Muslim Brotherhood. The supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood have reportedly called for a ‘day of rage’ (non-violent, of course), yet the president and many in Congress are still considering sending aide to the country. “I would just like you to keep these churches in your prayers because the front page of The Blaze has a picture of one of these churches in Egypt that has been burned down,” Glenn said. ”So just keep these people and these churches in your prayers.  In Egypt these are the churches that have just been burned down by the Muslim Brotherhood.  The Father Maximus churches, the St. George Church, the Good Shepherd’s Monastery where the nuns were attacked and burned.  The Angel Michael Church and the St. George Coptic Orthodox church have been burned.” More

BREAKING NEWS:  Facing condemnation at every hand from the West, Egypt’s military rulers received a powerful shot in the arm from Riyadh Friday, Aug. 16, with an unprecedented public assurance from Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdel Aziz that the kingdom supports Egypt in the fight “against terrorism” – the military rulers’ term for Muslim Brotherhood resistance. In a statement broadcast by official Al-Ekhbariya TV, Abdullah said Egypt’s stability is being targeted by “haters” and warned that anyone that interferes in Egypt’s internal affairs seeks to “waken sedition.” DEBKAfile and DEBKA Weekly have been reporting since last week that Saudi Arabia and the UAR stand firmly behind Egypt’s military strongman Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi. DEBKAfile reports a weak response to Brotherhood’s call for millions to rally Friday to join in the protest in support of deposed president Mohamed Morsi and against the government crackdown two days ago which left more than 600 dead. No more than tens of thousands of supporters took to the streets across the country Friday. By nightfall, 50 people were reported killed in clashes across the country – in Cairo, Fayoum, Damietta and Ismailia – including 24 security personnel. An officer was killed at one of the checkpoints thrown up to block the demonstrators’ access to Tahrir Square. The relatively low turnout points to the Muslim Brotherhood’s hard core having decided that avoiding further deadly clashes with the Egyptian military is the better part of valor. More

BEIRUT — The leader of the Lebanese-based terrorist organization Hezbollah on Friday blamed Sunni extremists for a string of attacks targeting the group’s strongholds over the past few months, including a car bombing that killed 22 people and wounded more than 300 on Thursday.  Sheik Hassan Nasrallah said all preliminary investigations showed Takfiri groups — a term for Sunni radicals — were likely behind the bombing in a predominantly Shiite southern suburb of Beirut, as well as other recent attacks. He said those groups “serve the interests of Israel.”  The Hezbollah chief acknowledged that Israel’s complicity in the attack had not yet been proven, but said the likelihood of Israeli and American intelligence services’ involvement could be ruled out. Israeli and American intelligence had doubtless played a role in the bombing in the Hezbollah stronghold, he said, and “no one should say” that he was exculpating Israel. But “the operational” element of the attack was carried out by Sunni extremists, he made plain. More

Health officials in Los Angeles County announced yesterday that a squirrel found covered in fleas has tested positive for bubonic plague, the scourge that develops into the deadly pneumonic plague known as the Black Death and wiped out an estimated 200 million people in Europe during the 14th century. Last month, two pet dogs in New Mexico were also discovered with the disease, which is genetically very similar to the strain from the 1300s. “It is the plague,” Dr. Mark Dimenna, deputy of the Environmental Health Department, told local TV reporters from KOAT 7. “It is the bubonic plague, the Black Death. It’s the same organism that it always has been “It’s the same organism that it always has been.” Is the US facing an outbreak of the ancient epidemic? That’s unlikely, according to public health officials. Scattered cases of the plague in wild animals, domesticated pets, and humans happen every year. The plague was introduced to the new continent around 1900, long after the devastating outbreak in Europe. Between 1990 and 2010, there were 999 cases of probable or confirmed plague found in humans in the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In recent decades, the US sees about seven cases of human plague a year. The plague can be successfully treated with antibiotics in most cases — an option our Medieval ancestors didn’t have — but the disease can still be deadly if allowed to progress. Most cases are seen in the Western US in rodents, which get the disease from fleas. New Mexico typically sees about half of all plague cases in the country. Last year the state had one human case, one dog case, and one cat case; so far this year it’s seen four dog cases. We’re actually in the middle of plague season now, as the majority of cases occur between late spring and early fall. More

New Jersey must immediately allow same-sex marriages now that the U.S. Supreme Court has invalidated the federal law defining marriage as between a man and a woman, lawyers for gay-marriage advocates argued before a state judge on Thursday. The arguments come in the first case to test whether the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act forces states to reconsider laws that restrict gay marriage, a dispute that could play out in courthouses across the country. Judge Mary Jacobson, hearing the arguments in Mercer County Superior Court in Trenton, said she would not rule until September at the earliest. Lawyers representing Governor Chris Christie, who vetoed same-sex marriage legislation last year, told Jacobson that the litigation is premature because the full effect of the Supreme Court’s decision is not yet known. Following the Supreme Court’s June 26 ruling in U.S. v Windsor, advocates of same-sex marriage filed court papers in a dozen states, arguing that the legal landscape had changed and that certain state laws prohibiting gay marriage could no longer withstand scrutiny. More

The Free Church of Scotland said a conscience clause, similar to that included for medical staff when abortion was legalised, would also shield teachers who do not want to include gay marriage in lessons. Despite repeated assurances from SNP ministers, the Free Church said legislation being considered at Holyrood gives “little protection” to clergy who believe marriage is between a man and a woman. A conscientious objector clause would remove any doubt about a celebrant’s right to refuse to conduct a gay ceremony without resorting to court action, it said. The church called for the change in a submission to Holyrood’s equal opportunities committee, which is conducting an inquiry into the Scottish Government’s Marriage and Civil Partnership Bill. SNP ministers have claimed the legislation already contains “unequivocal protection” for those clergy who do not want to conduct gay ceremonies, but this has been rejected by the Faculty of Advocates.  More

The truth really is out there … in Nevada. Documents obtained by George Washington University’s National Security Archive confirm for the first time what conspiracy theorists and UFO fanatics have long argued — that Area 51 exists. Chosen as the site for a top secret testing facility in the 1950s for the U-2 spy plane, the parcel of land, which for decades was never identified on any government maps, resides in the desert of southern Nevada. More
