Treasury warns default could be worse than Great Recession

The U.S. Treasury Department is warning that the economy could plunge into a downturn worse than the Great Recession if Congress fails to raise the federal borrowing limit and the country defaults on its debt obligations. A default could cause the nation’s credit markets to freeze, the value of the dollar to plummet and U.S. interest rates to skyrocket, according to the Treasury report released Thursday. Treasury officials hope by laying out potential consequences they will be able to bring pressure on Congress to act. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew has said he will have used up the extraordinary measures to avoid breaching the debt ceiling by Oct. 17. After that, the government will have around $30 billion of cash on hand. The report looked at the disruptions caused to financial markets during a similar stand-off between the administration and Congress over raising the debt limit. It then made projections about what could occur if there were an actual default. In August 2011, Congress eventually raised the nation’s borrowing limit before a default occurred but only after a protracted debate. The politics that nearly led to a default prompted Standard & Poor’s to cut the nation’s credit rating by a notch. More

Blizzards roll into parts of Wyoming and South Dakota

(AP) – Blizzards rolled into parts of Wyoming and South Dakota on Friday, bringing the snow-savvy states to an unseasonably early winter standstill and forcing a tourist town to cancel its annual Octoberfest’s polka-dancing bar crawl. The storm dumped 33 inches of snow in a part of South Dakota’s scenic Black Hills near Lead, “and it’s still coming down,” National Weather Service meteorologist Eric Helgeson said Friday afternoon. Wind gusts reached as high as 68 miles per hour just outside the weather service office in downtown Rapid City, where 8 inches of snow had accumulated, Helgeson said. The storm system also generated a tornado in Nebraska, blanketed Colorado’s northern mountains with snow and was threatening to push strong thunderstorms as far east as Wisconsin. Julie Lee said she and fellow members of her White Rose Band were accustomed to snow, just “not for the fourth of October.” They had barely unloaded their instruments in South Dakota’s Old West casino town of Deadwood before the wet, heavy snow started falling and closed part of Interstate 90, the area’s only interstate. More

DEVELOPING: Multiple reports, citing sources at the Metropolitan Police, say that a man was on fire at the National Mall on Friday afternoon. The incident was at 7th and Jefferson, and the person at the center of the incident is reportedly alive and breathing. Many early reports say that the man set himself on fire, but that is unconfirmed at this time. We’ll add more as it comes in on this developing story.  More

It’s Your Fault, No It’s Your Fault – 4 Days and Counting still closed for Business

Grandstanding rhetoric abounded but little tangible progress was evident on Friday, the fourth day of a government shutdown both Republicans and Democrats say they don’t want but claim they are unable to stop. ”This isn’t some damn game!” House Speaker John Boehner said at a news conference where he ratcheted up pressure on President Barack Obama and Senate Democrats to negotiate changes to Obamacare as part of any deal to end the shutdown. Repeating his insistence that the other side is responsible for the furlough of up to 800,000 workers and other impacts of the shutdown, Boehner said Democrats were willing to let the stalemate continue because they think they are winning the public debate.  ”The American people don’t want their government shut down and neither do I,” Boehner said, calling again for talks on anti-Obamacare provisions that House GOP leaders say are intended to ensure fairness under the president’s signature health care reforms. More

Billy Who? Younger Generation Unfamiliar With Evangelist Billy Graham

We gathered at Billy Graham’s alma mater over three days to explore his ministry’s place in American history and chronicle its meaning for the future. It was a fascinating conversation, and poignant, too, as Graham struggles with poor health at home in Montreat, N.C., far from the limelight he once commanded. But as scholars and admirers here in suburban Chicago added to the growing conversation on Graham’s legacy, a question hovers: How many people younger than, say, 60 are listening, As Duke Divinity School’s Grant Wacker told the Wheaton College gathering dominated by graying heads, during a recent lecture at Trinity College just one student knew the name Billy Graham. And that student thought Billy Graham was a professional wrestler “His story,” Wacker said, speaking of modern Christendom’s most famous figure, “is rapidly receding into the mists of history.”Graham, who turns 95 on Nov. 7, is under round-the-clock care at home, with limited vision, hearing and mobility. The Charlotte, N.C.-based ministry that’s now run by his son, Franklin, does its best to keep the aging evangelist in the forefront: His picture is on the home page of the website, and Thomas Nelson is due to release Graham’s 32nd book, “The Reason for My Hope: Salvation,” on Oct. 15. More

‘Mentor’ of 9/11 mastermind to run for president in Afghanistan

The former Islamist warlord who was named in the 9/11 commission report as being the “mentor” of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed — the mastermind of the attacks — has announced his candidacy for the presidency of Afghanistan. Abdul Rab Rasoul Sayyaf, 67, drove through Kabul on Thursday in a motorcade flanked by heavily-armed ex-fighters to register for the April 2014 election, The Telegraph reports. ”We will move to unite Afghanistan. If the nation is together and has the same voice, problems can be solved,” Sayyaf said, according to the Associated Press. Sayyef had to resign his position as an Afghan lawmaker before he registered for the presidential race, but decades ago he battled the Soviet’s occupation of the country and ran militant training camps. He met former Al Qaeda leader Usama bin Laden at one of the camps and is believed to have invited him to stay in Afghanistan when bin Laden was expelled from Sudan in 1996, The Telegraph reports. More

Students Suspended For Decorating School With American Flags and Patriotic Graffiti

RED WING, Minn. (WCCO) –
Students said they wanted to show their love for their country, but a superintendent believes it went a little too far.The result? More than a dozen students are suspended for drawing on doors and windows and scattering small American flags outside their high school. It took place Monday at Red Wing High School as part of Homecoming Week, but it’s a back-and-forth that’s gone on for weeks. “Red, white, and blue streamers, small American flags and erasable paint,” Bryce Reps said. He’s a senior and took part in the senior “prank.” Some seniors covered almost every window, some outside doors, even the skylight with the paint. “We have to take these things seriously,” Red Wing Schools Superintendent Karsten Anderson said. There’s a bit more to this red, white, and blue demonstration that dates back to last month. When the high school didn’t mark the anniversary of 9/11 as it had in years past, Reps said he took it personally. “I’m planning to go into the Air Force,” Reps said. More

DAYS OF LOT: Gay Porn Promoted to School Children for LGBT Appreciation Month This October

children being introduced to gay porn for GBLT monthSeveral school districts and individual teachers across the United States are planning to promote Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender History Month to students during the month of October, even though U.S. President Barack Obama has already set aside June as gay appreciation month. The Pacific Justice Institute believes that gay history in school is inappropriate for children, and they have issued a warning to parents that it may be coming to their child’s school. The Pacific Justice Institute points to the main website for LGBT history month, which highlights “historical figures” in the LGBT movement. Among the usual activists and celebrities are individuals whose work is X-rated, including a man known for his contribution to gay porn and as a bisexual erotic fiction author. Brad Dacus, president of Pacific Justice Institute, said, “It is deeply disturbing that the organizers of LGBT History Month think our kids should be celebrating homoerotic authors and porn producers. This should be a serious wake-up call for anyone who still thinks gay history in schools is a good idea.” PJI Staff Attorney Matthew McReynolds had this to say about the situation: “This is exactly why we fought California’s gay history mandate a couple of years ago. We knew this was not about real history. It was about pushing a political agenda and sexualizing kids at increasingly young ages. It is completely irresponsible for the organizers of this event to promote individuals whose work is utterly inappropriate for minors.” No one has said at this time whether a month will be set aside to celebrate heterosexual history, and if any agenda promoting heterosexuality will be pushed upon school children. The Free Patriot

Tropical Storm Karen prepares to soak U.S. Gulf Coast

Tropical Storm Karen is seen in this NOAA GOES East satellite image taken over the Gulf of MexicoTropical Storm Karen churned through the Gulf of Mexico on Friday, disrupting U.S. energy output on its way to drenching the coast from Louisiana and the Florida Panhandle, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Energy companies in the Gulf shut down production and evacuated workers from offshore platforms as the storm approached a region that produces nearly a fifth of daily U.S. oil output. Oil prices have been dropping amid concerns that a prolonged U.S. government shutdown would hurt demand, but the losses were limited as the storm in the Gulf curbed supply. Brent futures fell below $109 a barrel, then edged back up above that mark on Friday. The governors of Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida declared states of emergency to speed storm preparations, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency recalled some furloughed workers to assist. Karen weakened slightly overnight and had top winds of 60 miles per hour on Friday morning. It was centered about 275 miles south-southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi River and was moving north-northwest. The storm was expected to turn north and then northeast, hitting the coast on Saturday, forecasters at the Miami-based hurricane center said. More

Detroit Defaults On More Than $600 Million Of General Obligation Bond Debt

detroit default
Detroit, not unexpectedly, has defaulted on its most recent general obligation bond debt payment, Moody’s Investors Service said Wednesday. Detroit has $641 million in unsecured general obligation bonds and “no unsecured debt is being paid right now,” Bill Knowling, a spokesman for state-appointed Detroit emergency manager Kevyn Orr, told The Associated Press. An interest-only payment of about $4.3 million was made Tuesday on $479 million in secured general obligation bonds, Nowling said. Analysts in the rating agency’s Chicago office said Tuesday’s missed payment by the bankrupt city was no surprise. ”The actions … are consistent with our expectations and the emergency manager’s proposal to creditors that controversially split creditors into two classes — secured and unsecured,” Moody’s wrote. Orr is steering Detroit through the largest municipal bankruptcy filing in U.S. history. He has said that Detroit’s debt is $18 billion or more. More

Supreme Court rejects ‘Israeli’ nationality status

Israel’s population registry lists a slew of “nationalities” and ethnicities, among them Jew, Arab, Druse and more. But one word is conspicuously absent from the list: Israeli. Residents cannot identify themselves as Israelis in the national registry because the move could have far-reaching consequences for the country’s Jewish character, the Israeli Supreme Court wrote in documents obtained Thursday.  The ruling was a response to a demand by 21 Israelis, most of whom are officially registered as Jews, that the court decide whether they can be listed as Israeli in the registry. The group had argued that without a secular Israeli identity, Israeli policies will favor Jews and discriminate against minorities. In its 26-page ruling, the court explained that doing so would have “weighty implications” on the State of Israel and could pose a danger to Israel’s founding principle: to be a Jewish state for the Jewish people. More

More Churches Turning to Consultants to Drive Growth

Each weekend, 18,000 people gather at one of Eagle Brook Church’s five locations outside St. Paul, Minn., to hear pastors preach family-friendly sermons on avoiding excuses and learning to forgive. When it’s time to ask for donations, Executive Pastor Scott Anderson said he’s careful to ask only when God deems it necessary. In recent years, it’s been necessary a lot. Since 2001 the nondenominational church raised $40 million to build four new campuses. “We take very seriously the command Jesus gave to evangelize and to reach the world,’’ said Anderson. “When we start to get overfull, we look at the demographics and see if God opens a door.” A door has opened in Woodbury, he said, where about 2,000 people pack a high school auditorium each weekend. Last year the church decided to erect a $30 million campus in Woodbury with state-of-the-art sound, light and video systems and stadium seating for 1,500 people. Anderson and his staff knew it wouldn’t be easy asking churchgoers to donate to a fifth building campaign. So the church once again hired RSI Stewardship in Dallas—one of a legion of church consultant businesses in the U.S. RSI helped Eagle Brook raise $24.6 million three years ago during the recession. Last November the church started a new “One by One” campaign, with a goal of $20 million. “Our mission is unwavering,’’ the website reads, “to reach people for Christ. Our avenue to reach them is to build new campuses.” More

Rick Joyner Predicts Destruction of Republic, Third Great Awakening

Rick Joyner Speaks
In his weekly Prophetic Perspective on Current Events broadcast, Rick Joyner predicted the destruction of America’s republic—maybe even during President Obama’s second term. Joyner prefaced the Internet broadcast entitled “Has Democracy Failed?” by warning viewers that he would say some things that may be shocking. The segment was filmed on the day before the government shutdown. From Joyner’s prophetic perspective, the republic of the United States of America is crumbling because of tyranny from the government and from the people. “There’s no way this republic can last much longer,” he said. “It may not last through Obama’s second term. There are a lot of people who feel it can’t. There are forces at work right now seeking to undermine and destroy the republic. There’s almost a glib and joyful disregard of the Constitution, a belittling of the Constitution. We can’t make it without that. That’s our foundation, our moorings. We’re heading for serious tyranny—for a terrible tyranny right now.” Despite his strong words, Joyner is not all doom and gloom. He believes the republic can be restored. His heart’s cry? “Don’t let us be totally destroyed. Please raise up those who will save us.” As Joyner sees it, no election is going to fix America’s problems because the system is broken. He believes our only hope is a military takeover—martial law. “I believe there are noble leaders in our military that love the republic and love everything we stand for—and they could seize the government,” he said. “I am not advocating this. I am just telling you what could happen. They could seize it and help restore the foundations, help restore the Constitution.” Although Joyner is not calling for martial law, he is calling for a radical change. The housing market has made great strides toward recovery, and the government is reporting some positive economic signs, but Joyner’s still not convinced the worst is behind us. In fact, Joyner said the nation is “tottering over the abyss right now, and any little breeze could push us over.” More

Internet freedom on decline worldwide as governments tighten grip

Improved surveillance, takedown of opposition websites for “illegal content” and paid pro-government commentators are among the increasingly sophisticated tools used by authorities to restrict internet freedom, a new report claims. The 2013 Freedom on the Net report, compiled by non-profit Freedom House, says that 34 out of the 60 countries it surveyed suffered a falloff in internet freedom over the past year. Iran, Cuba, China and Syria were ranked as countries with the greatest restrictions. China, which blocks millions of websites and employs thousands-strong armies of censors, “led the way in expanding an elaborate technological apparatus for system internet censorship, while further increasing offline coercion and arrests to deter freedom of expression online.” Iceland, Estonia and Germany took the podium places in the ranking, followed by the United States. Nonetheless, the US was castigated for a “troubling decline” in internet freedom, largely as a result of wide-ranging surveillance practices revealed through Edward Snowden’s NSA leaks. “Critics have raised concern that the secret NSA programs may violate the 4th Amendment of the United States Constitution, which protects people inside the US (citizens and non-citizens alike) from unreasonable search and seizure, as well as human rights enshrined in international agreements,” stated the report. More

$175 premium for a young, healthy student? Thanks, Obamacare!

American media outlets were finally able to track down a mythical creature — a person who actually signed up for the Obamacare exchanges online. But that person, Chad Henderson, admitted to the Washington Post that the premium for the plan he enrolled in was $175. Ouch! Wasn’t Obamacare supposed to lower premiums? Henderson’s going to pay a $175 premium and he won’t even receive vision or dental insurance. He has contacts, so not having vision insurance is kind of a bum deal. Henderson, as far as we know a healthy, 21-year-old college student at Chattanooga State Community College who lives in Flintstone, Ga., and works part-time at a day-care center, did not qualify for tax credits to purchase insurance, according to the Post. Without Obamacare, Henderson could have received health insurance for as little as $44.72on, according to Michael F. Cannon of the Cato Institute.“I can’t yet say whether Chad’s $175 premium is the lowest-cost plan available to him through the Obamacare Exchange,” Cannon said. “[I’m in the process of researching that, and it’ll probably take a few hours.] But it’s probably close.”Thanks to Obamacare’s community-rating price controls that take effect in 2014, Henderson’s cheapest plan option on eHealthInsurance jumped up to $190.23.“So it appears that Obamacare quadrupled Chad’s premiums, and Enroll America thinks this is a success story,” Cannon said. One of the main reasons health insurance prices are going up under Obamacare is because of the one-size-fits-all insurance plans required by the health care law.During a congressional hearing in August, Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Kan., asked Marilyn Tavenner of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services whether President Obama’s promise that “if you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan” was true.“It is true,” Tavenner said, but added that it was true “under the assumption that your insurance is ‘true’ insurance that provides coverage.”Tavenner claimed that insurance that was not “true” was insurance that didn’t include coverage for things like hospitalization or cancer treatment. Washington Examiner

Potty-mouth Mass. cops could lose jobs under proposed legislation

A proposal by a Massachusetts legislator that would punish police officers for swearing or using racial slurs while dealing with the public is drawing immediate criticism from law enforcement. Under the bill proposed by Springfield Democrat Benjamin Swan, officers could even lose their jobs for using foul language. The bill, dubbed “An Act to prohibit inappropriate language use by sworn law officers,” is scheduled to be discussed in committee on Thursday. Co-sponsor Paul Heroux told the Boston Herald police are public servants and it’s unprofessional and “beneath the dignity” of officers to use bad language toward the people they represent. The Attleboro Democrat said the bill reinforces good police practice. “These folks, they’re public servants. It’s unprofessional and beneath the dignity of any public servant to use that language toward the people they’re representing,” Heroux said. “I think this bill is reinforcing good police practice.”  The bill would also make using racial slurs or any type of “negative stereotyping” a punishable offense for officers, according to the report. Swan claims the “n-word” is commonly used by law enforcement. Wayne Sampson, executive director of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, said Swan’s proposal amounted to “radical legislation” that is too broadly written. “Certainly we can’t have them speaking proper English at all times while working with gangs,” Sampson told the Boston Herald. “We feel this is very aggressive remedy for a situation that may not be as severe as projected here.”  Everett Chief Steve Mazzie, president of Major City Chiefs, told the newspaper he’s concerned that exemplary officers could be fired over one bad word. Take a model officer, a 10-year veteran. One arrest and he drops an ‘F’ bomb. And we’re going to fire him? I think that’s over the top,” Mazzie said. “Police departments wouldn’t tolerate any of that behavior anyway. But I think it’s extremely difficult to legislate civility.” Fox News

BIRTHPANGS – Over 1,000 Earthquakes in North Iceland Detected in the past few days

More than 1,000 minor earthquakes have been picked up by sensors on the Tjörnes fissure zone in Northeast Iceland in the past few days. The earthquake swarm, which began on Tuesday and is still ongoing, is not considered likely to lead to more serious activity. “They occur in a very limited area at a depth of 9-13 km (6-8 miles). They are of a similar magnitude; the largest quakes measure around three. Such activity strongly indicates an intrusion, which is common in Iceland,” geophysicist Kristín Jónsdóttir at the Icelandic Met Office told Kristín explained that intrusion is caused by magma forcing its way to the earth’s crust. When asked whether similar earthquake swarms have occurred in this area before, Kristín responded: “It is rather unusual to have such dense activity right there. But the area is known for seismic activity.” Iceland Review

Obamacare law creates “Data Services Hub” and tracks “social and behavioral” data

The Department of Health and Human Services (Source: Getty Images)
If  the IRS or NSA scandals involving misuse of private data were troubling, consider the implications of the new information databases created in the name of health care.  The newly-launched Affordable Care Act creates a massive electronic registry of private information that is accessible to bureaucrats in agencies ranging from the Internal Revenue Service to the Department of Homeland Security.  Its a wonder how Americans who are becoming increasingly concerned with federal surveillance and domestic spying programs could in any way approve of the so-called Obamacare law. The Affordable Care Act opened exchanges for customer enrollment on October 1st, the federal furlough notwithstanding.  The federally-run exchanges, euphemistically called “new health insurance marketplaces,” are accompanied by collection of a wide variety of personal data, which can now be legally shared numerous faceless government agencies — agencies which previously had to snoop, steal, or spy to get it.   No longer will any of our intimate medical details be reasonably considered either private or protected. To facilitate this forfeiture of individual privacy, the Department of Health and Human Services has created a massive, comprehensive database to record and store Americans’ personal information called theFederal Data Services Hub.  The Government Accountability Office (GAO) reports that the purpose of the Data Hub is to provide “electronic, near real-time access to federal data” and “access to state and third party data sources needed to verify consumer-eligibility information.”  No longer will any of our intimate medical details be reasonably considered either private or protected. More

Economic Catastrophe in the Making? Banks Stockpiling Cash, Dollar Value Sinking

Jim Rogers: An ‘even worse catastrophe’ is coming – Jim Rogers has a two-word message for U.S. investors: “Be careful.” ”The U.S. is the largest debtor nation in the history of the world,” Rogers told Wednesday night by phone from Singapore. “We may well have a big, big rally in the U.S. stock market, but it’s not based on reality. I would encourage investors to know you’re in a fool’s paradise, be careful, and when people start singing praises, say, ‘I’ve been to this party before, and I know know it’s time to leave.’” For Rogers, the author of “Street Smarts: Adventures on the Road and in the Markets,” it is only a matter of time until the U.S. stock market runs into devastating problems due to the Fed’s quantitative easing program and the prevalence of similar stimulative programs around the world. ”First of all, throughout American history, we’ve always had slowdowns every four to six years. That means that sometime in the next couple of years—three years, maximum—we are going to have problems again, caused by whatever reason,” Rogers said. “For instance, there was 2001 and 2002, and then 2007 and 2009 was much worse. Well, the next time it’s going to be worse still, because the level of debt is so, so, so much higher. Every country is increasing its debt at the same time.” More
First a default, then a depression? Some think so – Damage from a U.S. credit default would be more than bad public relations—it could affect everyone from bankers to pensioners to holders of supposedly sacrosanct money market funds. In a research note analyzing the various consequences of a debt default, banking analyst Dick Bove pointed to a variety of areas: Money market funds, which would “break the buck” and deliver negative returns; banks, which would not be able to lend because of the plunging value of the debt securities they own; and Social Security recipients and pensioners, for whom there would be a shrinking pool of funds, also because of the declining value of Treasurys, which are heavily owned by SS funds and institutional retirement plans. Indeed, dismissal of the government shutdown as a threat to markets has turned to dismay over the potential of a debt default that could have far worse consequences. More

Many $100 US Dollar Bills

US government shutdown: banks stockpiling cash – America’s biggest banks are stockpiling extra cash in their ATMs, amid fears that the government shutdown and the threat of a US default will induce a sudden panic among their customers.  Major banks have increased the amount of funds by around a third, and are holding daily meetings in sealed rooms to map out their contingency plans, according to well-placed sources. In some cases, they are discussing the possibility of extending free credit to customers who do not receive the Social Security payments they would normally rely on, because of the ongoing services blackout. The US government shut down on Tuesday, after the White House and the Republicans failed to come to an agreement over a stop-gap budget needed to keep scores of services running. Up to 800,000 public sector workers have been put on unpaid leave, and around 1m more are being asked to work for free, in what is the first shutdown for 17 years. Tensions are now mounting that the faultlines exposed by the shutdown will also affect negotiations over America’s self-imposed $16.7 trillion borrowing limit. Congress has until October 17 to agree a deal to extend the debt ceiling, or face an unprecented default on US sovereign debt, which could in turn trigger another global recession. More

Dollar sinks further as US shutdown passes 3rd day –
The dollar fell again Thursday against the euro and the yen as the US government shutdown ground through its third day with no end in sight. Worries mounted that the political paralysis in Washington would lead to the government being forced to default on its obligations. With it appearing that the issue of raising the country’s borrowing limit would be rolled into the fight over the budget, the Treasury warned that not raising the debt limit by October 17 would force it to default on its obligations. That “could have a catastrophic effect on not just financial markets but also on job creation, consumer spending and economic growth,” the Treasury said The euro rose to $1.3618 at 2100 GMT, compared with $1.3580 late Wednesday. The dollar fell to 97.27 yen from 97.34 yen, while the euro rose to 132.49 yen from 132.21 yen. The darkening mood in US dollar markets contrasted with a slightly brighter picture for the euro, analysts said. ”The euro now finds itself in the enviable position of having a central bank that is cautiously confident in its region’s economic recovery — something the British pound has enjoyed the past several months,” said Christopher Vecchio, currency analyst at DailyFX. That is “something the US dollar has not enjoyed, as evidenced by the Federal Reserve refusing to taper QE3 in September.” The British pound slipped back to $1.6155 from $1.6223, while the dollar slid to 0.8991 Swiss franc from 0.9026 franc. France 24

Obama Just Played His Big ‘Trump Card’ On The Debt Ceiling

Barack Obama
Early Thursday morning, Potomac Research Group analyst Greg Valliere predicted that if the debt-ceiling deadline grew closer, President Barack Obama would play his “trump card” in the debate. He would remind seniors that if Congress doesn’t raise the debt ceiling, seniors wouldn’t get their Social Security checks. ”GOP strategists like Karl Rove surely know that it’s just a matter of time before President Obama throws a game-changer — warning senior citizens that their Social Security checks won’t be mailed because of John Boehner,” Valliere wrote in a note to clients.  A few hours later, Obama did just that during a speech at M. Luis Construction Company in Rockville, Md. He spent much of the speech warning that while the ongoing government shutdown was damaging, failure to raise the debt ceiling by an Oct. 17 deadline would be even worse. More

30 Statistics About Americans Under The Age Of 30 That Will Blow Your Mind

Why are young people in America so frustrated these days?  You are about to find out.  Most young adults started out having faith in the system.  They worked hard, they got good grades, they stayed out of trouble and many of them went on to college.  But when their educations where over, they discovered that the good jobs that they had been promised were not waiting for them at the end of the rainbow.  Even in the midst of this so-called “economic recovery”, the full-time employment rate for Americans under the age of 30 continues to fall.  And incomes for that age group continue to fall as well.  At the same time, young adults are dealing with record levels of student loan debt.  As a result, more young Americans than ever are putting off getting married and having families, and more of them than ever are moving back in with their parents. More

Israel and Saudi Arabia are coordinating policies to counter US détente with Iran

Associates of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu Wednesday, Oct. 2, leaked word to the media that high-ranking Gulf emirate officials had recently visited Israel, signaling a further widening in the rift between Israel and President Barack Obama over his outreach to Tehran. These visits were in line with the ongoing exchanges Israel was holding with Saudi and Gulf representatives to align their actions for offsetting any potential American easing-up on Iran’s nuclear program. DEBKAfile reports that this is the first time Israel official sources have publicly aired diplomatic contacts of this kind in the region. They also reveal that Israel, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf emirates have agreed to synchronize their lobbying efforts in the US Congress to vote down the Obama administration’s moves on Iran. DEBKAfile reported earlier Wednesday:  After Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu met with President Barack Obama at the White House Monday, Sept. 30, Secretary of State John Kerry carried a message requesting moderation in the speech he was to deliver next day to the United Nations. More

Syria Claims It’s the Only Thing Stopping a Jewish Takeover of the Planet

Apparently the minute all those Salafist Jews enter Damascus, the rest of the world bows to the vast Israeli armies and agree to make Chanukah a mandatory international holiday.  Only Syria can save the world now. By shooting other Muslims. To stop the Jewish conspiracy. (In the Muslim world the preceding train of thought actually makes sense.) The official Syrian RTV agency says that Syria is the last obstacle for Jews to finally take over the world. “The pre-war on Syria, and the current war on Syria, is World War III.” Actually it kinds of looks like two sects of Muslims sniping at each other from broken buildings. Control of the oil resources is the economic engine of the war prior to the final declaration of victory for Israel over the world So far Israel’s oil resources consist of a lot of olive trees and some speculative wells. But apparently if Syria falls, Israel will have all the oil in a country that has slightly more oil than oil giants like Colombia, Peru and the Congo Republic. More

5 Faith Friendly Companies That Will Appeal to Those With a Biblical Worldview
Are the faithful truly driven toward companies, businesses and products that align with their theological worldview? That’s the question that brand strategist Chris Stone, founder of the Stone Agency, set out to answer through his “Faith Driven Consumer” initiative, an innovative research project that gauges interest in values-motivated consumer behavior. Over the past five years, Stone has intensely studied American businesses that are faith friendly — and those that are not. Among the companies deemed viable for people of faith are Aeropostale, Dollar General, Family Dollar, Kohl’s and Belk. And those are only a few of the examples. But before we get into the profiles on these companies, let’s explore FDC’s back-story and strategy. In a world filled with oft-times negative messages and brands, many believers are constantly on the prowl for brands that align with their worldview. So, Stone set out to find consumers whose daily decisions and actions are profoundly impacted by their faith — and now he’s trying to bring them together. More

300% Increased brain cancer risk for long-term users of cell phones and cordless phones, new study reveals

A Swedish study on the use of wireless phones, including cell phones and cordless phones, has uncovered a link between electromagnetic radiation exposures and the risk of malignant and non-malignant brain tumors. Cell phones and cordless phones emit a form of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation, radiation which can be absorbed by tissues and cells that come into close contact with the phone, e.g., the head and neck. The most conclusive evidence as to the dangers of cell phone and similar radiation exposures come from studies on long-term exposure (ten years or more) like this Swedish study. More

—Gov. Phil Bryant has declared a State of Emergency in preparation for Tropical Storm Karen. The storm is forecast to impact Mississippi within the next 48 hours. A State of Emergency declaration is an administrative tool that allows state officials to position and deploy resources to assist areas that are impacted by an emergency. “I have declared a State of Emergency so Mississippi can respond immediately if Tropical Storm Karen affects our state,” Gov. Bryant said. “Residents should not over react, but this should serve as a reminder to make your storm preparations now. I will continue working with MEMA, the Mississippi National Guard, the Department of Public Safety and other emergency officials to monitor the situation, and we will issue updates as the storm develops.” Some things residents can do to prepare for Tropical Storm Karen include knowing where they will go if evacuation is necessary and having a fully stocked emergency supply kit. More

Hobby Lobby apology unlikely to calm storm over its policies

Under a barrage of criticism, crafting superstore giant Hobby Lobby caved over what a political blogger alleged is anti-Semitism in its merchandising policies. Or, rather, it partially caved. It posted an apology late Wednesday evening for an employee’s alleged anti-Semitic comment, but pledged only to evaluate the merchandising practices at the heart of the storm. “Hobby Lobby apologizes for any possible employee comments that may have offended anyone, especially our Jewish customers and friends. Comments like these do not reflect the feelings of the Green family or Hobby Lobby. We are investigating this matter and do not tolerate discrimination at our company or our stores,” the company posted on its Facebook fan page. More

Two days after excoriating Hassan Rouhani as a wolf in sheep’s clothing who lies about Iran’s nuclear ambitions, and 10 days after he instructed Israel’s UN delegation to leave the General Assembly hall rather than hear Rouhani speak, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would “consider” meeting the Iranian president, in comments published early Friday. Netanyahu, speaking to National Public Radio as part of a media blitz while in the US, said he would question Rouhani on Tehran’s nuclear program, which the Israeli leader has called to be completely shut down. More

Obama Orders Border Patrol Agents to Stand Down

Shawn Moran, Vice President of the National Border Patrol Council, gave an exclusive interview with Breitbart News and the interview could shock you.  It seems that the agents have once again been told to stand down.  They are to quit pursuing smugglers, drug and human, along with all illegal aliens, which could include illegals from countries that wish to foment violence against the United States. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s drugs, bodies, or how large the group is, our agents are being ordered to stand down by Border Patrol management.  I have received reports from our agents in every single sector from San Diego to the Rio Grande Valley in Texas that they are receiving these orders.” “They are not being relieved in place, they are simply being told that someone else is being dispatched, but none of us have seen that occur.  We are simply being ordered to stand down and stop tracking and trying to apprehend the criminals.” (This means that even in the middle of a hot pursuit, the agent must back off and he is not relieved by someone at the point of surveillance) More

When it started, who could possibly have known it would turn out like this? After all, it emerged right after the historic ’60s Civil Rights movement, which nobly outlawed racial segregation in America. And in the warm glow of the Martin Luther King era, many people came to believe “gays” were simply the next group needing protection from discrimination.  Of course, being an overwhelmingly Christian nation meant millions of Americans strongly objected to homosexuality on moral and religious grounds. But Americans are also the most pluralistic, tolerant and open-minded people on earth, and were increasingly inclined to give “gay rights” activists the benefit of the doubt. Eventually warming up to a growing “gay-friendly” culture (promoted at every turn by the news and entertainment media), Americans abandoned their previous caution, flung their doors wide open and heartily welcomed the “gay rights” agenda with open arms. However, it was a Trojan Horse. And most people had no idea what lay in waiting. Today – as documented in October’s groundbreaking Whistleblower issue, titled “THE NEW SEXUAL REVOLUTION” – a new totalitarian order is sweeping the land. WND

RISE OF THE DRAGON: Why you’ll soon be paying rent to the Chinese

Today, I want to talk about something easy and basic, something that every American should understand. When you borrow money, you eventually have to pay it back – plus interest. That’s all you need to know to understand the financial crisis and the terrible consequences we face if we don’t stop borrowing money from foreign creditors. Before the financial crisis of 2008/2009, America was caught up in a huge debt-financed spending boom. Our trade deficits were soaring out of control simply because we continued to consume more than we produced. The debt to finance this consumption piled up in the form of mortgages and the federal deficit. It enabled the housing boom, which in turn created the structured-finance debacle that wrecked AIG and wiped out Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers. What fewer people realize about the boom and bust is that foreigners continued to pile up more and more U.S. assets. In a short period of time, foreigners received $2.5 trillion worth of net U.S. assets. More

Egypt’s army planning to attack targets in Gaza

The Egyptian army has planned military attacks on specific targets in the Gaza Strip in the event that the security situation in the northern Sinai peninsula deteriorates, a senior Egyptian security official told the Ma’an news agency. The source said that Egyptian reconnaissance planes had photographed the potential targets.  According to intelligence sources, the Egyptian Army would attack from the air.  The plan to attack targets in Gaza is based on the Egyptian assessment that some of the attacks in the northern Sinai, especially in El Arish and in Rafah were carried out by armed Palestinians based in Gaza.  The security source said that the Egyptian Army is specifically targeting the extremist groups in Gaza who are regarded as hostile and it does not view the entire population there in this way. More

Mysterious earthquake swarm damages many villages in Galati, Eastern Romania: strange sounds like ‘boiling water’

October 5, 2013 – ROMANIA — The Galati area experienced dozens of earthquakes up to a magnitude of 3.8(last one just before writing this article). The quakes have an extremely shallow depth, have a relatively high shaking intensity and are causing a lot of damage in the villages near the epicenter areas (the epicenters have to be situated in an area of many kms and not in one location). Some people are not waiting for more earthquakes and left their houses due do the damage, fearing a collapse if further quakes would strike. Galati is a region with relatively low seismic activity and earthquake swarms like the current events are only known from the newspapers in other regions/countries (ER could trace some unconfirmed reports that a number of earthquakes occurred in March 1894). Residents and seismologists are very surprised and are trying to understand what is happening. Oil extraction and flooding where initially mentioned as  possible triggers but these reasons cannot explain why some other phenomenon like  a constant sound like “boiling water” (coming from the ground) and a strange water smell (like sulfur) is being noticed. Another reason the people are scared of are the big cracks appearing in the ground. There is no question that the seismic activity is caused by flood or oil exploitation,” said Mihnea Costoiu, Minister for Higher Education, Scientific Research and Technological Development. Scientists  are saying that there was surely no big historic earthquake in the Galati area. Although scientists are absolutely not sure about what will happening in the near future, they are trying to prevent panic in the affected villages. The affected population are upset about the lack of information from the authorities and the scientists (we at ER know that people are expecting answers from science which cannot be fulfilled at this level of scientific knowledge). As a reaction people tend to believe stupid rumors coming from so called people with special capacities while others have been praying to the Gods to end the swarm. Romanian TV stations are reporting on the phenomena with a number of LIVE reports. –Earthquake Report
