Just before the weekend, the National Park Service informed charter boat captains in Florida that the Florida Bay was “closed” due to the shutdown. Until government funding is restored, the fishing boats are prohibited from taking anglers into 1,100 square-miles of open ocean. Fishing is also prohibited at Biscayne National Park during the shutdown.  The Park Service will also have rangers on duty to police the ban… of access to an ocean. The government will probably use more personnel and spend more resources to attempt to close the ocean, than it would in its normal course of business.  This is governing by temper-tantrum. It is on par with the government’s ham-fisted attempts to close the DC WWII Memorial, an open-air public monument that is normally accessible 24 hours a day. By accessible I mean, you walk up to it. When you have finished reflecting, you then walk away from it.  At least that Memorial is an actual structure, with some kind of perimeter that can be fenced off. Florida Bay is the ocean. How, pray tell, do you “close” 1,100 square miles of ocean? Why would one even need to do so? Apparently, according to an anonymous Park Service ranger, “We’ve been told to make life as difficult for people as we can. It’s disgusting.”  Centuries ago, King Canute famously failed to command the ocean tide to stop. His display was actually a means to educate his subjects on the limits of royal power. Today, however, our President actually believes he has the power to control the oceans.  Breitbart

Federal Government Kicks People From Their Home: Lake Mead

In a stunning move, the federal government threw people out of their homes on Lake Mead. A popular place to live on a boat, the federal government shut down access to the lake during the federal shutdown. According to  Rob Richardson at OffGrid Surival’s website, the order has had people who live on the Lake Mead scrambling to find another place  to go. People pay monthly fees to moor their boats on the lake. For many who live on the lake,  there house boat is their only home. Some have lived on the lake for as long as 20 years. The National Park Service even pulled the dock so that people who did not comply were stranded. Those who were at the dock did not have enough water to pull their boat out of the water to comply. There appears to be no refund on the fees paid by boat owners either. More

China issues highest alert for Typhoon Fitow

China was on its highest alert for Typhoon Fitow, with hundreds of thousands evacuated as the storm was expected to slam into the east coast as early as Sunday night, weather authorities said. The National Meteorological Centre issued a red alert for the storm, saying it was expected to make landfall in China late Sunday or early Monday between southern Zhejiang province and northern Fujian province. The storm, which the centre classified as “strong” with winds up to 151 kilometres (94 miles) an hour, was located Sunday evening about 215 kilometres southeast of the city of Wenzhou in Zhejiang and was moving in a mostly westerly direction at a speed of 18 kilometres an hour. Zhejiang has so far evacuated more than 202,000 people ahead of the expected landfall, state news agency Xinhua said. More

UN: Destruction of Syrian chemical program begins

International inspectors began destroying Syria’s stockpile of chemical weapons and the machinery used to create it, a United Nations official said Sunday, racing under a tight deadline aiming to eliminate President Bashar Assad’s chemical weapons program within nine months. The move kicks off the ambitious program, prompted by a chemical weapons attack in mid-August that killed hundreds of civilians on the outskirts of Damascus and brought a rare consensus at the U.N. Under a Security Council resolution in September, the first stage is to destroy Syria’s capability to produce chemical weapons by Nov. 1. He said that by the end of Sunday, a combination of both weapons and some production equipment would be put out of order. ”Today is the first day of the phase of destruction and disabling. Verification will also continue,” said the U.N. official, who works alongside inspectors. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of the matters sensitivity. “The plan was that two types categories of materials would be destroyed: one is equipment for making (weapons) — filling and mixing equipment, some of it mobile, and some it static. The other is actual munitions,” he said. More

ECONOMIC ALERT: Financial analyst warns U.S. debt default would trigger a Great Depression

WASHINGTON – As we close out the first week of the government shutdown, a bigger and even more toxic disaster is creeping into the fray that could make the contentious budget battle look like a slap fight. The Treasury Department said Uncle Sam will be broke by October 17th unless something is done. Treasury secretary Jack Lew hammered home that point Thursday by releasing an unusually ominous statement that warned of catastrophic risks to the economy. House Speaker John Boehner has said he won’t let the government default on its debt, but until steps are taken to raise the nation’s debt ceiling, the possibility of default is still theoretically alive. “If they seriously default on the debt, what we’re really talking about is a depression,” says veteran financial sector analyst Richard Bove, VP of research at Rafferty Capital Markets. In the news video he explains how the fallout would be a lot worse than the recession suffered in 2008 and the aftershocks would be felt for at least a decade. “The first thing you have to do is look at who holds the debt,” Bove says of the $16.7 trillion of bonds the U.S. currently has outstanding. “The first, biggest owner (of U.S. debt) is the social security fund, so you’d have all of these people who are receiving social security payments who now have to question whether they’ll get their payments.” Clearly, that would cause a huge disruption to millions of Americans. But Bove says that is only the beginning since the second biggest holder of Treasuries (at about 12% of the total) is the Federal Reserve, which has “91% of its assets backed by U.S. government debt.” If the value of those assets were to decline, which they indisputably would in a default, Bove says the net effect would be that “we have nothing of value backing the dollar.” They’re actually “Federal Reserve Notes’ as well as the number one asset of choice held in the reserves of governments and businesses all over the world.
A plunge in Treasuries would also devalue the dollar, which would instantly make everything we buy more expensive, and in turn destabilize countries and economies all over the world. “Eleven-percent of all U.S. debt is owned by the Chinese,’” he says. “That $1.4 trillion represents about a third of the reserves of the People’s Bank of China, so what we’ve now said to the PBOC is, ‘Watch out, we may hit the value of a third of your assets and you can’t do anything about it.’” And this isn’t even half of it. As Bove explains, money market funds, which are used by virtually every person with a savings or investment account, are also “heavily loaded with Treasuries.” So are most bond funds and so-called balanced funds (growth and income funds). A default on U.S. debt would not only cause money funds to “break the buck” –not be able to pay 100-cents for each dollar invested)– but would also cause forced selling by countless other funds that are mandated to immediately sell any asset that has defaulted. “That could easily put $750 billion of Treasuries on to the market” Bove says, inferring that rates interest rates would also spike, and normal borrowing/lending transactions would end. Speaking of banks, the U.S. banking industry holds over a trillion dollars worth of Treasuries and another trillion dollars of government issued mortgage-backed securities, Bove says. If those bonds were to go down in value, he says the banks would also have to “write down the value of those assets and, in essence, wipe out their equity.” It would make the banks insolvent. To summarize, Bove asserts that a default is unthinkable because it would trigger a huge reduction in the value of U.S. debt, which would go beyond disrupting social security payments. A default would upend money markets, destroy bond funds, slam the brakes on lending, cause interest rates to spiral, make our banks insolvent, and deal a blow to our foreign trading partners and creditors around the globe; all of which would throw the U.S. and the world into economic disarray.
October jinx: October is historically the worst month to play chicken with global financial markets. So the U.S. deficit spending reaching its ceiling limit on October 17, 2013 may already be the worst thing in the world for jittery financial markets that could be spooked by a miscalculation. What’s the first thing that comes to mind when investors hear the word October? Ghoulish Halloween costumes? Nope. Stock market crashes? Bingo! When it comes to wealth suddenly disappearing, October can be diabolically frightful. The stock market crash of 1929 that led to the Great Depression occurred in October. So did the 22.6% plunge suffered by the Dow Jones industrial average in 1987 on “Black Monday.” The scariest 19-day span during the 2008 financial crisis also went down in October, when the Dow plunged 2,675 points after investors fearing a financial collapse went on a panic-driven stock-selling spree that resulted in five of the 10 biggest daily point drops in the iconic Dow’s 123-year history. October is “known as the jinx month because of the crashes,” according to Stock Trader’s Almanac, the bible for seasonal stock market statistics and trading strategies. Coincidently, Atlas Shrugged Part II, about the financial collapse of America and the institution of martial law, was also released in October of 2012. – Extinction Protocol

Hezbollah is in possession of long-range missiles capable of carrying a chemical warhead, a Lebanese parliamentarian said according to a report Sunday. Khaled Zaher, from the anti-Hezbollah al-Mustaqbal party, told the Saudi al-Watan newspaper that Syrian President Bashar Assad had transferred significant amounts of weaponry to Hezbollah, including the missiles. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps supervised the transfer of the weapons and helped build and design the launching pads in Lebanon, he said. More

DAYS OF LOT: Elyria woman accused of raping infant at day care center

=Heather Koon, 25, of Elyria, is in custody this weekend charged in the suspected rape of an infant at a day care center. Koon was arrested Thursday and charged with two counts of rape after investigators said they found a video on her laptop computer that showed her having sexual contact with an infant. Authorities said they found the laptop at the apartment of James Osborne, Koon’s boyfriend, who is a registered sex offender living in Lorain County. He was also arrested and taken to Lorain County jail on Thursday. The laptop had a video of Koon engaging in a sexual act with an unknown infant, according to police. But police said Koon was charged with two counts of rape after a second victim was identified. She is also charged with threat of force, according to records at Lorain County Jail. Osborne is charged with tampering with records, according to the list of inmates. More

At least 50 killed, over 200 wounded as Egypt protests turn violent

Egyptian celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the Arab-Israeli War were marred by a fresh wave of violence, with at least 50 people killed and over 200 wounded in clashes between police and supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi. RT’s Arabic team also got caught in the turmoil in Cairo, with producer Ahmad al-Ashqar getting injured in the right leg in Giza’s Dokki district. At least 50 people were killed and 268 others injured across Egypt, AFP cited senior health ministry official Ahmed al-Ansari as saying. At least 45 individuals were killed in Cairo and another five south of the capital, according to the official.  Deputy Interior Minister General Sayed Shafiq told local media that the security situation is now “under control” in Cairo. At least 423 people were arrested in Cairo and Giza during clashes on Sunday, the country’s Interior Ministry said. According to the Ministry’s Facebook page, 180 people were detained in Giza, and another 243 people were apprehended in downtown Cairo. In Cairo, Egyptian police fired tear gas to disperse pro-Morsi demonstrators as they marched towards Tahrir Square, where pro-army supporters gathered to celebrate the 1973 war anniversary. The tear gas and birdshots reportedly sent protesters running towards western Giza’s Dokki neighborhood. Police chased demonstrators and beat them up before detaining them, a witness told AFP.  More

GETTING OUT OF DODGE – 9% Have Considered Quitting Their U.S. Citizenship

Few Americans have ever thought about giving up their U.S. citizenship, but nearly half think U.S. citizens should be able to be citizens of more than one country. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that only nine percent (9%) of U.S. citizens have considered giving up their American citizenship.  Perhaps in part that’s because 93% consider it at least somewhat important to be a U.S. citizen, including 79% who think it is Very Important. But 45% believe U.S. citizens also should be allowed to be citizens of other countries. Thirty-six percent (36%) disagree, while 19% are not sure. However, in the context of immigration reform, 54% of likely U.S. voters said in March found that potential U.S. citizens should not be allowed to maintain dual citizenship. More

Top defector to unveil secret plan to kill pope

Two polar opposites on the world stage during the war-torn 1940s were Iosif Stalin and Pope Pius XII – the former, one of the most conscienceless mass-murdering tyrants of all time, and the later, one of most revered figures of his day, whose role in counteracting both communism and Nazism was unparalleled. Despite the nonsense about Pius being “Hitler’s pope” – which the new book “Disinformation” proves beyond all doubt was the result of a massive Soviet disinformation campaign – in reality Pius was greatly admired, with Winston Churchill calling him “the greatest man of our time” and Albert Einstein writing, “Only the Church protested against the Hitlerian onslaught on liberty. Up till then I had not been interested in the Church, but today I felt a great admiration for the Church, which alone has had the courage to struggle for spiritual truth and moral liberty.” Even the chief rabbi of Rome and his wife, Israel and Emma Zolli, converted to Catholicism, with Zolli adopting the Christian name Eugenio, to honor the man who, according to him, had done so much to protect the Jews during the war: Pope Pius XII, born Eugenio Pacelli. More

As the Obama administration and other Western powers remain on a war footing against Syria, U.S. technology and assistance provided to the regimes ruling Iran and North Korea by a scandal-plagued arm of the United Nations may be indirectly benefiting the Syrian regime. Prominent critics of the technical assistance offered to the two rogue states by the major UN agency complained that the aid was a violation of numerous national laws and potentially international sanctions.  Instead of remedying the situation and holding those responsible accountable, however, the international organization and its leadership have doubled down – allegedly punishing whistleblowers while continuing to assist the two dictatorships. Just this summer, WND has learned, the World Intellectual Property Organization, or WIPO, was once again on a “technical assistance” mission to Pyongyang, infuriating international observers and U.S. lawmakers who were already outraged over the previous round of aid. The controversial mission to North Korea, which ran from June 24 through June 28, was led by WIPO’s “infrastructure modernization division,” but specific details about the cooperation are hard to come by. More

Bolton: Obama duped by Iran ‘charm offensive’

President Barack Obama’s phone call and diplomatic outreach to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is playing into Tehran’s “fraudulent” charm offensive and represents a victory for Iran’s drive to obtain nuclear weapons, former United Nations Ambassador John Bolton warned in a radio interview today. “I think for those who are opposed to Iran getting nuclear weapons, the best we can hope for is that no deal is reached; that the fraudulent nature of this diplomatic charm offensive will be revealed,” Bolton told Aaron Klein on his WABC Radio show.  The former diplomat warned, “Iran is not prepared to make any real concession on its program.” He continued: “People will see that Iran is determined to keep the capability to build a nuclear weapon. I am afraid, however, that both the United States under the Obama administration and Europe have been all too ready for some period of time to legitimize the Iranian nuclear weapons program.” Bolton criticized a statement Obama made Friday that Iran should be allowed to retain the right to a “peaceful” civilian nuclear energy program once the Iranian regime signs a rigid inspection agreement. “That is wrong,” Bolton retorted. “Iran has been violating the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. They are not to be trusted with that kind of nuclear technology. I don’t think they are entitled to a uranium enrichment capability. To allow that to happen would be to go back 10 years.” More

Hamas to PA: Stop Talking to Israel

Hamas on Sunday called on the Palestinian Authority, headed by Mahmoud Abbas, to stop peace talks with Israel. Instead, said Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri, the PA should work for national unity. Abu Zuhri said that the remarks made by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu during his speech at the Bar-Ilan University, according to which negotiations with the PA are fruitless so long as the PA refuses to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, require the PA to renounce the dialogue with Israel, implement the terms of the reconciliation plan between Hamas and Fatah and formulate a strategy agreed to deal with the “Zionist stubbornness and crimes,” as he put it. Hamas and Fatah, which is headed by Abbas, have been at odds with one another since 2007, when Hamas violently took control of Gaza, setting up its own government there and cracking down on Fatah officials who reside in the territory. More
On Thursday, the government’s official Obamacare Facebook page was riddled with people expressing sticker shock over the government’s high cost premiums after struggling for hours to wade through the technical failures vexing Obamacare exchanges all across the country.   ”I am so disappointed,” wrote one woman. “These prices are outrageous and there are huge deductibles. No one can afford this!” The comment received 169 “likes.”  ”There is NO WAY I can afford it,” said one commenter after using the Kaiser Subsidy Calculator. “Heck right now I couldn’t afford an extra 10$ [sic] a month…and oh apparently I make to [sic] much at 8.55/hour to get subsidies.” Another person shared a link found on the federal government’s main Obamacare page listing premium estimates for small business employers: The information is not very complete as I don’t see anything about deductible or other detailed info, but it does given an actual price as to the “Premium.” It is VERY SCARY!! For example, my insurance plan right now for my spouse and I costs $545 a month with 100% coverage after my $2500 deductible. We are both 32 years old. When I looked at this site for 80% coverage it says it will be $954.78 a month!!!! So compare my old Plan: 100% coverage for $545 a month To New Plan: 80% Coverage for $945 a month. This is only only an estimate but it is VERY Scary for me to see this kind of increase in rates and reduction in benefits! More

Iran arrests 4 men in ‘nuclear facilities sabotage’ plot copyThe Iranian authorities have arrested four men for planning to sabotage nuclear sites, reports state news. The announcement comes as Iran’s newly-appointed president takes steps to allay fears over its supposed nuclear weapons program. The head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, Ali Akbar Salehi, announced on Sunday that a “number of saboteurs” had been caught “red-handed” before they could carry out their plan. “Four of these individuals were caught red-handed and their interrogations are ongoing,” he said, according to the Mehr news agency on Sunday. Salehi did not elaborate on any of the details of the alleged plot to sabotage Iranian nuclear facilities and did not specify the nuclear sites that were targeted. He added that the suspects were now being interrogated by Iranian authorities.  Iran has accused the West on a number of occasions of sabotaging its nuclear program. In the past Tehran has slammed the US and Israel for orchestrating the Stuxnet cyberattack on nuclear facility systems in 2010. Iran has also claimed the West is behind the assassination of its nuclear scientists. More

Netanyahu blames Mideast conflict on refusal to recognize Jewish state

In an about face from his speech from the same podium four years ago, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday voiced doubt at the possibility of a two-state solution, citing the Palestinian leadership’s refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state. Speaking at the 20th anniversary ceremony for Bar-Ilan University’s Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies, the prime minister placed blame for the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict on Ramallah’s refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state. “The Palestinians must abandon their refusal to recognize the right of the Jewish people to have their national state,” he said. Netanyahu dismissed claims that Israel’s occupation of the West Bank stood at the heart of the conflict, stating instead that so long as the Palestinians don’t recognize the Jewish state’s right to exist, there will not be peace. More
