DAYS OF LOT – It’s ba-a-ack! Job protections based on sex preference

The U.S. Senate is expected to vote Monday evening on the “Employment Non-Discrimination Act,” legislation that supporters say offers basic workplace protections for homosexuals and transgendered Americans, but critics warn it will force businesses to cater to bizarre behaviors and force anyone who disagrees with those lifestyles to keep their mouths shut. The legislation, also known as ENDA, would forbid employers from firing or refusing to hire anyone because of their sexual orientation or for asserting a different “gender identity” than their anatomy suggests. Supporters say protections in those areas are no different than longstanding bans on employment decisions made on the basis of race, sex, ethnicity, religion or disability. But others contend there is a vast difference between judging a person on their skin color versus their sexual behavior. “There’s a reason why we don’t allow discrimination based on race, which is that it’s a characteristic which is inborn, involuntary, immutable, innocuous and in the Constitution,” Peter Sprigg, senior fellow in policy studies at the Family Research Council, told WND in a radio interview. “All of those criteria apply to race. None of them applies to the choice to engage in homosexual conduct or in cross-dressing behavior, which is what gender identity deals with.” More

RIOT WARNINGS OVER FOOD-STAMP CUTS

The 5 percent rollback in food-stamp funding that hit at the start of November has unleashed a wave of familiar scaremongering.  The reduction returns food-stamp benefits to the level they would have been without the infusion of stimulus cash since 2009. That money is now spent, and the average individual monthly benefit is dropping from about $133 to $125.40. Roughly $7.60. Democrats and the anti-hunger lobby treat the reduction as a cruel and draconian cut. Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Fla., contends it “will literally take food right out of the mouths of poor children as well as their families, the elderly, the unemployed and the underemployed.” The rollback “will be close to catastrophic for many people,” a spokesman for Feeding America, a leading hunger relief organization, told CBS News. One food-bank executive implied that riots may soon follow. “If you look across the world, riots always begin typically the same way: when people cannot afford to eat food,” Margarette Purvis, president and CEO of the Food Bank for New York City, told Salon.com. More

HealthCare.gov Users Warn of Security Risk, Breach of Privacy

Justin Hadley logged on to HealthCare.gov to evaluate his insurance options after his health plan was canceled. What he discovered was an apparent security flaw that disclosed eligibility letters addressed to individuals from another state. “I was in complete shock,” said Hadley, who contacted Heritage after becoming alarmed at the breach of privacy. Hadley, a North Carolina father, buys his insurance on the individual market. His insurance company, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, directed him to HealthCare.gov in a cancellation letter he received in September. After multiple attempts to access the problem-plagued website, Hadley finally made it past the registration page Thursday. That’s when he was greeted with downloadable letters about eligibility — for two people in South Carolina. More

Super-Volcanoes in Maine could produce largest on Earth

Maine has supervolcanoes. Wait, Maine has volcanoes? Yes, and their eruptions could have been among the biggest ever on Earth, geoscientist Sheila Seaman reported Tuesday at the Geological Society of America’s annual meeting. ”Long before there were these things called supervolcanoes, we’ve known about giant, big, horrific silicic volcanic eruptions,” said Seaman, of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The most massive of these blasts in recent history was Toba, which blew up an island in Indonesia 2.5 million years ago. The explosion heaved 700 cubic miles of magma out of the Earth’s crust. Around 420 million years ago, a series of super-eruptions dropped thick piles of ash and lava fragments along the proto-East Coast. There are at least four volcanoes spread out along 100 miles of Maine’s coast, Seaman said. [Countdown: History’s Most Destructive Volcanoes] The huge volcanic rock piles are consistent with caldera-forming eruptions, Seaman said. These explosions empty a magma chamber, leaving a gaping wound in the Earth think Yellowstone National Park, or the San Juan volcanic field in Colorado. More

Earthquake hits close to Fukushima, tremors felt as far as Tokyo

A 5.0 earthquake was registered on Japan’s east cost in a prefecture neighboring Fukushima. It comes as a top Japanese politician called for acknowledgement of the fact that some Fukushima evacuees would never be able to return to the area. Sunday’s tremors were felt as far away as Tokyo, but no casualties or damage reports were released at the time.  The news comes just ahead of one of the most dangerous nuclear cleanup operations ever attempted. Scheduled to start at the beginning of November, it will involve the careful, manual removal of 400 tons of spent nuclear fuel rods from the plant’s Reactor No. 4 – with an atomic yield greater than the Hiroshima bomb. The long and cumbersome operation will not permit even the slightest tremor, or Japan risks a catastrophe greater than Chernobyl.  Meanwhile, a Japanese official from the government’s ruling party disagrees with a plan to allow people back, who escaped the Fukushima disaster on the grounds that habitable areas have not yet been identified by the government. The evacuation was precipitated by huge amounts of radiation released into the air and sea, following the 2011 reactor meltdowns, which had been a result of an earthquake-induced tsunami.  More
The moon and sun will team up to create a rare event Sunday (Nov. 3): a hybrid solar eclipse that could amaze eclipse chasers across eastern North America, the Atlantic Ocean and Africa. But you don’t have to hop on a plane to see the celestial spectacle — you can watch it live online. The online Slooh community observatory will provide a free webcast of Sunday’s hybrid solar eclipse beginning at 6:45 a.m. EDT (1145 GMT). Slooh host Paul Cox will provide live views of the eclipse from the Kenya countryside in Africa, with other feeds expected from Gabon, Africa, and the Canary Islands off Africa’s western coast. Meanwhile, a partial solar eclipse will be visible from the U.S. East Coast and parts of Canada, as well as southern Europe and most of Africa, weather permitting. You can watch the solar eclipse webcast live on SPACE.com, courtesy of Slooh. The last hybrid solar eclipse occurred in April 2005 and it won’t occur again until 2023. [How to See Sunday’s Solar Eclipse]  ”This will be the most difficult eclipse we’ve covered at Slooh . More

DAYS OF LOT: West Point NY hosts first wedding between 2 men

WEST POINT, N.Y. Two West Point graduates were married Saturday in the military academy’s first wedding between two men. Larry Choate III, class of 2009, married Daniel Lennox, class of 2007, before about 20 guests. Choate, 27, taught Sunday school at the U.S. Military Academy’s Cadet Chapel and said he always thought of it as the place he would get married if he could. West Point hosted two same-sex weddings of women in late 2012, more than a year after New York legalized same-sex marriage. But Saturday’s wedding was the first time two men wed at West Point. ”It’s maybe one more barrier that’s pushed over a little bit, or maybe one more glass ceiling that’s shattered that makes it easier for the next couple,” Choate said Friday. Choate and Lennox are out of the military and wore tuxedoes for the ceremony. Some of their guests were in uniform. The 28-year-old Lennox is getting his master’s degree in business administration at Harvard University. Choate is applying to Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. The pair did not know each other as cadets but met later through a friend. Chaplain Cynthia Lindenmeyer officiated the ceremony. CBS

Police batten down security hatches for NYC Marathon, Including Scuba Diver Patrols

Sunday’s New York City Marathon will be the best-protected race that runners can enter as a result of enhanced security measures and police presence on land and by sea, according to New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly. Helicopters, scuba divers, police boats, K-9 dogs with explosive-detection capabilities and hundreds of cameras are among the precautionary measures that will be deployed along the marathon route and throughout the city’s five boroughs. Kelly said that while security planning for the event typically takes several months, the New York Police Department began preparing for this year’s marathon the day after the Boston Marathon bombing in April, which killed three people and wounded more than 260 others.  “Planning for the marathon is always a major undertaking and I can assure you this year was no exception,” Kelly said Friday at a security briefing on the marathon, which is expected to draw more than 45,000 runners. Hundreds of cameras will be monitored in real-time by the NYPD’s Domain Awareness System, he said. The department has also located more than 1, 400 privately owned cameras along the 26.2-mile route that can be tapped for additional security footage if necessary.More

Egypt can no longer look to U.S For “Security Needs”

CAIRO  – Egypt’s Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy said on Saturday that Egypt would look beyond the United States to meet its security needs and warned Washington that it could no longer ignore popular demands in a changed Arab world. Speaking ahead of a visit by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, Fahmy said the United States must take a long-term view of its relations with Egypt and understand that in the wake of the Arab Spring, “it would have to deal now with the Arab peoples, not only with Arab governments”. Emphasizing the “turbulent” state of Washington’s ties with its longtime Arab ally after U.S. military aid curbs in response to the army’s overthrow in July of President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood, Fahmy said Egypt would have to develop “multiple choices, multiple options” to chart its way forward – including military relationships. Fahmy, in a rare interview, also sent this message to the United States: “If you’re going to have interests in the Middle East, you need to have either good relations with the country that is the focus of the Middle East, or at the very least well-managed relations”. More

Evangelist Billy Graham to Mark 95th Birthday With Message to America

Evangelist Billy Graham’s voice is softer and his body weaker, but the man who helped transform Christianity in America and counseled U.S. presidents will reach out to the nation on his 95th birthday in an effort to revitalize the church. Graham, who has not preached publicly since 2006 because of frail health, has filmed a public message to air on national television on his November 7 birthday, giving fans a rare and possibly final opportunity to see the man dubbed “America’s Pastor.” ”Our country is in great need of a spiritual awakening,” Graham says in a program titled “The Cross.” “With all my heart, I want to leave you with the truth.” Graham’s message is at the heart of what the Charlotte, North Carolina-based association bearing his name calls its largest evangelism effort in the United States in its 63-year history. It comes at a time when most U.S. evangelical leaders say they are losing influence, studies show Americans increasingly do not identify with any religion and many young people are unaware of Graham’s legacy. ”The students that I teach don’t really know who Billy Graham is,” said Anne Wills, a religion professor at Davidson College outside of Charlotte. “They don’t have any idea about the scope of his influence.” His son Franklin, who runs the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, has been accused of injecting his father into recent politics in ways the elder Graham had carefully avoided. Franklin Graham said filming the telecast at his mountain home in Montreat, North Carolina, was difficult for his father, once called “God’s Machine Gun” for his thunderous oratory, but he wanted to share his gospel message once more. More

PROPHECY SCHOLAR: AMERICA AT CROSSROADS

America faces two futures, says internationally-recognized prophecy expert and Fox News, CNN and History Channel commentator Paul McGuire in his new book, “A Prophecy of the Future of America.” In one scenario, the church and the nation turns back to God and experiences what world-renowned evangelist Billy Graham calls an end-times “great spiritual awakening.” In the other, America doesn’t repent of its immorality and experiences a “crisis of unprecedented proportions” – a complete economic collapse, a surprise nuclear or terrorist attack or a wave of devastating earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, solar flares and other cataclysmic disasters. “Billy Graham is the closest thing we have in America to a genuine prophet of God, and I believe God is using him to issue a prophetic warning and a prophetic message of hope to America,” said McGuire, who hosted the nationally syndicated “Paul McGuire Show” for a decade. On his show, he interviewed numerous world leaders and New York Times bestselling authors, including President Jimmy Carter, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Sen. John McCain, Rev. Rick Warren, author Joel Rosenberg and author Tim LaHaye. More

PROPHECY WATCH – U.S. signals it won’t be backing Israel

Washington is sending an increasingly strong signal to Israel that it will not support or engage in military action against Iran, despite Tehran’s insistence on continuing its nuclear program, according to Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin.  As WND recently reported, in what amounts to a final warning, Israel said it intends to take military action against Iran’s nuclear facilities, since it believes Tehran is within a month of constructing a nuclear bomb. Israeli officials say that they may not wait that long before undertaking military action. While Iran has consistently denied its nuclear program is designed to build weapons, Israel bases its assessment on centrifuges that are producing enriched uranium at 20 percent. Israel says that provides a basis for further enrichment to more than 90 percent, which could fuel a nuclear weapon. Thomas Pickering, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations who is close to the Obama administration, said that the United States hasn’t taken any options – meaning military action – off the table but intends to give a priority to pursuing a negotiated compromise over Iran’s nuclear program. In a recent interview with Iran Review, Pickering said that there has been no change in the administration’s actions. More

Netherlands Water Supply turns “Blood Red”

In Nootdorp, South Holland, in the Netherlands, the water has turned a deep red, and locals are at a mystery as to why, though the phenomenon has prompted some to remember biblical prophecies of water turning to blood.  “It is probably an algae,” Ruder speculated, “but in our region that just does not happen.” David Dilling, an American living in the Netherlands who captured the odd phenomenon on video, however, described the canal waters as turning a “blood-red, biblical color.” In 2011 WND reported a similar incident of blood-red waters in Texas that also prompted comparisons to biblical tales. Live Science reported on the incident too, with an article titled “End Times? Texas Lake Turns Blood-Red.” The Bible contains several references to water and blood, including the passage in Exodus where the Nile River flows with blood as a plague, an incident mentioned again twice in the Book of Psalms. But in the prophetic book of Revelation, the Scriptures foretell a time when oceans and rivers will flow with blood again. Revelation 8:8 states, “And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea; and the third part of the sea became blood.” More

In midst of Syrian war, giant Jesus statue arises

In the midst of a conflict rife with sectarianism, a giant bronze statue of Jesus has gone up on a Syrian mountain, apparently under cover of a truce among three factions in the country’s civil war. Jesus stands, arms outstretched, on the Cherubim mountain, overlooking a route pilgrims took from Constantinople to Jerusalem in ancient times. The statue is 40 feet tall and stands on a base that brings its height to 105 feet, organizers of the project estimate. That the statue made it to Syria and went up without incident on Oct. 14 is remarkable. The project took eight years and was set back by the civil war that followed the March 2011 uprising against President Bashar Assad. Christians and other minorities are all targets in the conflict, and the statue’s safety is by no means guaranteed. It stands among villages where some fighters, linked to Al Qaeda, have little sympathy for Christians. So why put up a giant statue of Christ in the midst of such setbacks and so much danger? More
