Kim urges N. Korea military to bolster combat readiness

Seoul (AFP) – North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has urged the country’s military to bolster its combat readiness, saying a war could break out “without any prior notice”, state media reported Wednesday. The call comes at a time of heightened tension on the Korean Peninsula following the execution of Kim’s uncle and former mentor in an unusually public purge. Kim visited the Command of Large Combined Unit 526 on Christmas Eve, the North’s official Korean Central News Agency said. ”He instructed the unit to put utmost spurs on rounding off its combat readiness… always bearing in mind that a war breaks out without any prior notice,” it said. More

UN condemns Christmas Eve demolitions of Palestinian homes by Israel

The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestinian refugees has condemned Israel’s demolition of Palestinian Bedouin dwellings in the West Bank, calling for an immediate halt. “UNRWA condemns the latest demolitions in the West Bank, which displaced 68 people, the most recent of which occurred on Christmas Eve,” spokesman Chris Gunness said in a statement. “The demolitions took place in Ein Ayoub near Ramallah and Fasayil al-Wusta near Jericho in the Jordan valley with 61 persons displaced in Ein Ayoub, and seven persons, all refugees, displaced in Fasayil al-Wusta,” Gunness said. He added that 32 of those displaced were children, ”including a five year old girl who is paralyzed from the waist down.” “In addition, some 750 head of sheep and goats are without shelter at this crucial lambing season,” he said. Gunness stated that at least 663 Palestinian buildings – including 259 homes – have been demolished, and 1,103 Palestinians have been displaced in the West Bank and East Jerusalem this year. The spokesman urged Israel to obey international laws and halt demolitions. More
In an attempt to beat back gains by Al-Qaeda-linked insurgents, the United States is moving “dozens” of Hellfire missiles and surveillance drones into Iraq. According to a report by The New York Times, the decision comes after Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki requested help from US President Barack Obama during a meeting in Washington last month. The situation in Iraq has become a serious concern over the last year, as insurgents from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria – Al-Qaeda’s regional affiliate – spread through western and northern parts of the country, as well as nearby Syria. More than 8,000 Iraqis have been killed in 2013. That figure includes three bombings that killed nearly 40 people on Christmas Day. Despite the movement of missiles – 75 Hellfire missiles are being sent to Iraq alongside 10 ScanEagle surveillance drones – some experts believe the US response to be insufficient without the deployment of more powerful military weapons, such as armed drones. While Iraq’s foreign minister has suggested an American-run drone operation as a possibility, Maliki – who is likely running for a third term as prime minster – has yet to make such a request. More

PA Officials: Israel ‘Killing the Peace Process’

Officials in the Palestinian Authority (PA) were outraged on Wednesday night, following reports that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu plans to announce extensive new construction in Judea and Samaria. That announcement is scheduled for next week, parallel to the next scheduled release of 26 terrorists from Israel’s prisons, yet another “gesture” to the PA. PA official Wasil Abu Yousif told The Associated Press (AP) that the expected announcement is evidence that Israel is “not serious” about pursuing peace. ”It’s clear to everyone now that the Israeli government is killing the peace process,” he said. While stopping short of threatening to withdraw from the current round of peace negotiations, Abu Yousif told AP that Israel’s policy would force the PA to seek “more substantial alternatives.” More
