North Carolina warns residents to avoid water and fish from contaminated Dan River

North Carolina has beautiful countryside, with the Appalachian mountains rolling through its western lands. A nice sprawl of rivers work their way through the state. Near the northern border winds Dan River. Once a serene river to fish from and an excellent source of fresh water, it has now become clouded with pollution from a catastrophic Duke Energy coal-ash spill. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has issued a warning to all people on and along the river downstream of Duke’s Energy plant, telling people to avoid contact with any water or sediment in the area. They also advise everyone to not eat any fish miles downriver from the spill. The warning, which comes 10 days after the spill, reports that a Duke waste pond collapsed, sending 82,000 tons of coal ash and 27 million gallons of water flooding into the Dan River. The beautiful river clouded over quickly as the 27-acre waste pond drained into the fresh water, polluting it for miles. Officials from DHHS warned area residents of possible skin irritation if they were to come in contact with the polluted river water. As reported by The Charlotte Observer, DHHS stated that “‘a potential hazard exists immediately downstream of the release,’ and that people should avoid recreational contact with water and sediment from the river downstream of the spill, and not touch submerged or floating coal ash or ash that has washed up on the riverbank.” More

RADICAL MUSLIMS POSING NEWBORNS WITH GRENADES

Parents who “embrace radical Islam” are promoting “martyrdom” for teens and even newborn infants by posing  them with grenades, pistols, ammunition and automatic weapons in images on social media, according to a startling new report from the Middle East Media Research Institute.  The report, with dozens of images, confirmed the practice of teaching children to embrace violent jihad against Islam’s enemies. “Children’s deaths in fighting are being glorified in videos and photos circulated online and in social media,” MEMRI said. “In a November 2012 video, a Syrian boy, who appears to be about 10, digs his own grave and expresses his wish for ‘martyrdom.’” The report was compiled by Steven Stalinsky, MEMRI executive director, and R. Sosnow, head editor at MEMRI. The Muslims are taking “pride in the ‘next generation’s of al-Qaida that they are raising,” the report said. “Children are filmed praising Osama bin Laden, saying that they want to ‘conquer Rome’ and to ‘slaughter infidels.’ “Tariq ‘Abdu, the organizer of a Syrian campaign to stop al-Qaida’s recruitment and exploitation of children, says that children carrying weapons has become ‘a familiar sight,’ not only in the areas controlled by the opposition, but also in the refugee camps for Syrians in Jordan and Turkey,” MEMRI reported. More

Feds want to track your DNA like license plate…

The federal government doesn’t just want the ability to track down your car; it wants to be able to track down your body as well. Just as details are emerging about a controversial, nationwide vehicle-surveillance database, WND has learned the federal government is planning an even more invasive spy program using “physiological signatures” to track down individuals.  The goal of this research is to detect – as well as analyze and categorize – unique traits the government can exploit to “identify, locate and track specific individuals or groups of people.” According to the program’s statement of objectives, “The scope of human-centered [intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR] research spans the complete range of human performance starting at the individual molecular, cellular, genomic level.” Documents WND located through routine database research reveal the ability to follow people by detecting “certain characteristics of operational interest” is designed for U.S. military and intelligence-gathering superiority. It remains unknown when such capabilities might transition to the realm of domestic counterterrorism or law enforcement operations; however, the feds – through the Air Force Research Lab, or AFRL – are recruiting private-sector assistance in order to make this “biosignature” spying a reality.More

Midwest, Northeast Snow Train Continues Monday and Tuesday

There will be no rest for the snow weary from the Midwest to East Coast as yet another quick moving system threatens to lay down a swath of several inches of snow from Minnesota to Massachusetts Sunday night through Tuesday. An onslaught of winter storms has buried much of the Northeast over the past few weeks. While this upcoming storm is not expected to be a historic event, it can snarl travel, resulting in more flight delays in a winter full of them already. A disturbance riding along the U.S./Canadian border is expected to first bring snow to Minnesota and Wisconsin Sunday night, with a wintry mix across Iowa and Illinois.  By Monday, winter weather should extend through the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. A surge of milder air should allow precipitation to remain mainly rain south of the Ohio River. The heaviest snow from this storm is expected to fall in Wisconsin, northern Illinois and Michigan where some locations may receive a half foot. Chicago, Ill. should be hit hard by snow on during Monday.More

Health Costs For Patients With Pre-Existing Conditions Could Skyrocket

People with serious pre-existing diseases, precisely those the president aimed to help with ObamaCare, could find themselves paying for expensive drug treatments with no help from the health care exchanges.  Those with expensive diseases such as lupus or multiple sclerosis face something called a “closed drug formulary.” Dr. Scott Gottlieb of the American Enterprise Institute explains,”if the medicine that you need isn’t on that list, it’s not covered at all. You have to pay completely out of pocket to get that medicine, and the money you spend doesn’t count against your deductible, and it doesn’t count against your out of pocket limits, so you’re basically on your own.” More

snowThe heaviest snowfall in decades has left 3 dead and more than 800 injured across Japan, local media reports. Saudi Arabia to supply Syrian rebels with anti-aircraft missiles

Frustrated by the deadlock of the second round of Geneva 2 talks, Saudi Arabia has reportedly offered to supply the rebels with anti-aircraft missiles. Meanwhile Russia has accused the US of once again hijacking peace talks and pushing for regime change. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Russian-made antitank guided missiles and Chinese man-portable air-defense systems are up for grabs, already waiting in warehouses in Jordan and Turkey.  An Arab diplomat and several opposition figures with knowledge of the Saudi efforts have told WSJ that these supplies are likely to tip the battlefield scales, as the rebels will become capable of taking on the government’s air power and destroying heavy armored vehicles.  “New stuff is arriving imminently,” a Western diplomat with knowledge of the planned weapons deliveries told the American publication. Leaders of the Syrian opposition said they don’t yet know the total amount of military aid that will be shipped. The new weapons are expected to reach southern Syria from Jordan while the opposition in the north will get arms from Turkey, the Western diplomat said. More

HEADS UP! Russian reconnaissance satellite to crash to Earth Sunday

Portions of Russia’s defunct Kosmos-1220 satellite will come crashing back to the planet on Sunday following a fiery, uncontrolled descent through the Earth’s atmosphere, Russian officials said. Fragments of the former reconnaissance satellite are expected to survive the high-speed re-entry and will most likely plunge harmlessly into the Pacific Ocean, Colonel Alexei Zolotukhin told Russian news agency Ria Novosti. “As of February 7, 2014 the fragments are expected to fall on February 16. The exact impact time and location of the fragments from the Kosmos-1220 satellite may change due to external factors,” Zolotukhin said. That uncertainty means the satellite could potentially fall anywhere on Earth. Similar uncontrolled descents – such as the November 2013 re-entry of the European Space Agency’s GOES satellite – have crashed harmlessly into the ocean. But in 1978, a different decommissioned Kosmos satellite crashed into an unoccupied part of Canada, spreading radioactive debris and leading to a lengthy clean-up. And in 2009, a third Kosmos satellite crashed at over 26,000 miles per hour with a U.S. Iridium telecommunications satellite, sending thousands of bits of space junk into orbit. The exact size and weight of the Kosmos-1220 satellite is unknown, Ria Novosti reported, adding to the uncertainty of the upcoming event. More
