Egypt court sentences 683 to death including Brotherhood chief

Minya (Egypt)
(AFP) – An Egyptian court sentenced 682 alleged Islamists and Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie to death on Monday, a lawyer and prosecutor said, after two brief sessions the defence partly boycotted. The same court in the southern province of Minya also reversed 492 of 529 death sentences it passed in March, commuting most of those to life in prison. The court, presided over by judge Said Youssef Sabry, had sparked an international outcry with its initial sentencing last month amid an extensive crackdown on supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi. More

In 20 percent of American families in 2013, according to new data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), not one member of the family worked. A family, as defined by the BLS, is a group of two or more people who live together and who are related by birth, adoption or marriage. In 2013, there were 80,445,000 families in the United States and in 16,127,000—or 20 percent–no one had a job. The BLS designates a person as “employed” if “during the survey reference week” they “(a) did any work at all as paid employees; (b) worked in their own business, profession, or on their own farm; (c) or worked 15 hours or more as unpaid workers in an enterprise operated by a member of the family.” More

Japanese Christians Praying Hard for an Unprecedented Move of God

In the winter, the Japanese city of Sapporo draws skiers from around the world to its perfect, powdery snow. When springtime arrives, it’s the pale pink cherry blossoms that have tourists flocking to the city. But this year, many of Sapporo’s Christians are hoping to attract a crowd for an entirely different reason. They want their fellow Japanese to have an encounter with the living God. “We want the to see God move in a way they’ve never seen before,” says the Rev. Chad Hammond, director of Asian affairs for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA). At the invitation of a group of Japanese churches, the BGEA is holding a large-scale evangelistic event May 9-11 in Sapporo, the largest city on Japan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido. More

In 1954, the United States Congress added the words under God to the country’s Pledge of Allegiance. Sixty years later, most Americans would like to keep it that way, despite ongoing legal challenges to the pledge. A lawsuit filed against a New Jersey school district on March 28 contends that reciting the phrase under God in the pledge sends a message that nonbelievers are bad citizens and creates a hostile environment for atheist students. But a telephone survey of 1,001 Americans from Nashville-based LifeWay Research found that 85 percent want to keep “under God” in the pledge. Researchers did find 1 in 4 Americans (25 percent) believe forcing students to say “under God” violates their rights. But less than 1 in 10 (8 percent) Americans want to remove “under God” from the pledge. More

Intercessors Warn of 48-Hour Window to Repent, Choose Restoration

We have an acute spiritual problem in this nation, spiritual leaders warn, that has infected not only our politics but our entire culture. Our once godly nation is rapidly sliding into a moral morass because we have looked to men, not God, and have followed other idols. Only sincere, humble repentance within the body of Christ—turning away from the ways of the world and the flesh and seeking instead God’s purity and holiness—will trigger God’s promise to “hear from heaven, and … forgive their sin and heal their land” (2 Chr. 7:14). The problems are found in every person, every family and every nation. More

Jewish leaders blast John Kerry for Israel ‘apartheid’ comments

Jewish leaders are fuming over remarks made by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who cautioned that Israel risks becoming an apartheid state if a two-state solution cannot be reached Mr. Kerry told senior officials during a closed meeting on Friday that a two-state solution is the “only real alternative” for Israel and the Palestinian territories, “because a unitary state winds up either being an apartheid state with second-class citizens, or it ends up being a state that destroys the capacity of Israel to be a Jewish state,” The Daily Beast first reported. More

Middle East waters hold energy gold

A border dispute off the coasts of Lebanon and Israel threatens another violent conflict in the Middle East, as the two countries battle over a zone that has the potential to produce billions of dollars in energy revenue. The dispute, which has defied U.S. efforts at mediation, is the result of Israeli and Lebanese claims over a potentially lucrative plot of territory in the Mediterranean Sea. The 850 square kilometers in the triangle-shaped area, which both countries consider to be their Exclusive Economic Zone, could be full of offshore natural gas and oil. More

A team of Spanish archaeologists has unearthed what could be one of the most ancient images of Jesus, painted on the walls of an underground structure in an Egyptian tomb.  The Egyptologists from Catalan, Spain, made the discovery in the ancient Egyptian city of Oxyrhynchus, with the tombs said to date from the 6th and 7th centuries. The leader of the search team, Josep Padró, a 20-year veteran of excavations in the region, told the Spanish-language newspaper La Vanguardia the find was “exceptional.” According to the Local, the discovery by a joint team from the Catalan Egyptology Society and the University of Barcelona has caused such a buzz that even Egypt’s minister of antiquities, Mohamed Ibrahim, is now personally involved. He broke the news himself in a press release which described the contents of the tombs, which are thought to have belonged to a well-known writer and a family of priests. More
