WAR DRUMS: Armed US drones over Baghdad, Saudi and Jordanian tanks deploy

mappedThe Obama administration announced Friday, June 27, that unmanned aerial vehicles flying over Baghdad would henceforth be armed in order to defend the US Embassy in the Green Zone. The embassy was originally assigned the tasks of guardian of Iraq’s central government and symbol of post-Saddam national unity. These roles have remained out of reach ever since the Americans invaded Iraq in 2003. Today, the armed drones overhead are reduced to holding back the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) and its local Sunni allies from overrunning the Green Zone and seizing the embassy, most of whose 5,000 staff were evacuated as a precaution. President Barack Obama has again decreed that no US soldiers will take part in combat in Iraq. Therefore, American military personnel on the ground will be there to guide the drones to their targets. Those targets were defined Saturday, June 28, by Gen. Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, as striking at ISIS leaders and defending Iraq’s strategic facilities. He did not elaborate. More

Israel hits Gaza with 12 air strikes after rocket fire

Israeli air raids hit the Gaza Strip 12 times overnight, wounding two people after rockets fired from the Palestinian territory caused a fire in southern Israel, sources from both sides said. The strikes late on Saturday and early on Sunday targeted sites across the coastal enclave, slightly wounding two people and damaging property in Gaza City, an interior ministry spokesman in Gaza said. ”There were a total of 12 strikes in two stages,” an Israeli army spokesman told AFP, saying the raids targeted several “sites of terrorist activity”. More

The current outbreak of Ebola in West Africa is now the largest in history, but how likely is it to spread to the United States or other countries around the world? It’s theoretically possible that people with Ebola could travel to other countries on planes, and infect others outside the region. However, it’s extremely unlikely that the virus would then cause further outbreaks in communities in the United States or other developed countries with systems in place to contain such deadly infections, experts say. So far, the Ebola outbreak, which first appeared in December 2013, has infected at least 600 people in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, including 338 who died, according to the World Health Organization. The medical group Doctors Without Borders has said the epidemic is “out of control” in the region, and that they do not have the resources to care for the growing number of people who are sick. More

ISIS crucifies 9 men in Syria’s Aleppo

A jihadist group in Syria has publicly executed and crucified nine men, eight of them rebels fighting both President Bashar al-Assad’s regime and the jihadists, a monitor said on Sunday. The report comes amid fierce clashes on the outskirts of Damascus between the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which is spearheading a major offensive in Iraq, and rebels, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. ”ISIL executed eight men in Deir Hafer in the east of Aleppo province” on Saturday because they belonged to rebel groups that had fought against the jihadists as well as Assad’s forces, it said. More

A large shark bumped into a fishing boat off a popular Long Island beach over the weekend in what may have been the third sighting of a great white in waters off the New York and New Jersey coasts this week. Greg Grodecki was out with fishing buddies 15 miles off the shore of Fire Island Sunday when a wide-mouthed fish sidled up to his boat. Grodecki said he thought it was a great white shark.  ”It was just amazing to see it, so beautiful and powerful,” Grodecki said. “It’s just a great experience.”More

DISTRESS OF NATIONS – Economist Warns Civil Unrest Rising Everywhere.

The greatest problem we have is misinformation. People simply do not comprehend why and how the economic policies of the post-war era are imploding. This whole agenda of socialism has sold a Utopian idea that the State is there for the people yet it is run by lawyers following their own self-interest. The pensions created for those in government drive the cost of government up exponentially with time. The political forces blame the rich and this merely creates a class warfare with no resolution for the future. Even confiscating all the wealth of the so-called rich will not sustain the system. Consequently, we just have to crash and burn and start all over again. More

North Korea fires 2 missiles.

North Korea fired two projectiles Sunday that “appear to be short-range missiles” into the sea off the eastern coast of the Korean peninsula, a South Korean defense ministry official told CNN. The launch took place shortly before 5 a.m. (4 p.m. ET Saturday), according to the official. The projectile’s estimated range is 500 km (310 miles). This is the second reported launch by North Korea in recent days. On Thursday, U.S. and South Korean government officials reported North Korea had launched three projectiles from its southeastern coast. North Korea has launched missiles several times in the past, often while South Korea is interacting with foreign powers. More

Thousands go without water as Detroit cuts service for nonpayment.

It  has been six weeks since the city turned off Nicole Hill’s water. Dirty dishes are piled in the sink of her crowded kitchen, where the yellow-and-green linoleum floor is soiled and sticky. A small garbage can is filled with water from a neighbor, while a bigger one sits outside in the yard, where she hopes it will collect some rain. She’s developed an intricate recycling system of washing the dishes, cleaning the floor and flushing the toilet with the same water. ”It’s frightening, because you think this is something that only happens somewhere like Africa,” said Hill, a single mother who is studying homeland security at a local college. “But now I know what they’re going through — when I get somewhere there’s a water faucet, I drink until my stomach hurts.” More
