Mass die-off of fish at Lake Cajititlan in western Mexico shrouded in mystery

fish 2Mexican authorities say a mass die-off of fish at a lake in western Mexico was not due to natural causes. Over 33 metric tons of rotting dead fish have been removed from Lake Cajititlan in Jalisco state. The cause of the die-off has not been determined but the state environment department said late Sunday it was not due to natural causes. Workers using shovels, a bulldozer, boats and wheel barrels removed the dead fish, which are being sent for testing. The small, finger-sized fish are apparently a type of chub. It was the fourth time this year there has been a die-off at the shallow lake, which sits between Guadalajara and Lake Chapala. Some had speculated abrupt changes in temperature or oxygen levels may have been responsible for earlier incidents. Herald Sun

I can take Kiev in two weeks, Vladimir Putin warns European leaders

The Russian president is reported to have boasted his forces could sweep into Kiev in a fortnight if he wanted to as Nato announced it would build a new “spearhead” rapid reaction force. Vladimir Putin has boasted to European leaders that his forces could sweep into Kiev in two weeks if he wanted. The Russian president reportedly made the threat to the European Commission president during talks on the Ukraine crisis. Mr Putin told Jose Manuel Barroso: “If I want to, I can take Kiev in two weeks,” Italy’s La Repubblica newspaper reported, implying this could be the result if the EU stepped up sanctions against Russia. More

Pakistan gripped with fear as protests mount..

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was clinging to power Monday as protesters stepped up their assault on government buildings while the capital was gripped with fear and confusion about whether the country’s powerful military will step in to defuse the tension. As the demonstrations calling for the prime minister’s resignation enter their third week, Sharif is trying to navigate Pakistan’s worst political crisis in more than a decade. With the violence increasing, what started as a routine demonstration has morphed into concerns that the government of a nuclear-armed country could collapse. Former cricket star Imran Khan and Tahirul Qadri, a firebrand preacher and scholar, allege that Sharif was elected last year in fraudulent balloting and hasn’t done enough to fix the country’s ailing economy. More

Feds Still Studying Why Lesbians Are Obese

The federal government is still seeking answers as to why the majority of lesbians are obese and U.S. taxpayers are footing the bill, which now totals $2.87 million. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) study is now in its fourth year, receiving an additional $670,567 for fiscal year 2014. The project seeks to determine why “nearly three-quarters of adult lesbians overweight or obese,” and why gay males are not. In just two years the project’s budget has nearly doubled, growing from $1.5 million to nearly $3 million today, despite fears that sequestration could jeopardize the project and other NIH funding. The study, which is being led by S. Bryn Austin, an associate epidemiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, operates on the premise that there is a “striking interplay of gender and sexual orientation in obesity disparities.” More

California water infrastructure on verge of historic collapse

Water is increasingly hard to come by in drought-stricken California, where many farmers are struggling to get enough water just to pay the bills. But the situation in the Golden State is far worse than many people realize, according to new reports, as underground aquifers that take decades to recharge are being sucked dry, and water infrastructure that has long sustained the agricultural growing regions of the state continue their collapse. Writing for The Washington Post (WP), journalist Joby Warrick draws attention to what many scientists say is an unprecedented collapse of California’s vast water infrastructure, which is marked by an elaborate system of canals, reservoirs and wells that transfer water from the mountains and other areas to the Central Valley. Altogether, the state contains some 27 million acres of cropland. This system is now failing, say experts, and the consequences will more than likely be unparalleled in California’s history. More

Israel Announces Massive West Bank Land Grab despite sharp rebukes from others

Israel announced on Sunday a land appropriation in the occupied West Bank that an anti-settlement group termed the biggest in 30 years, drawing Palestinian condemnation and a U.S. rebuke. Some 400 hectares (988 acres) in the Etzion Jewish settlement bloc near Bethlehem were declared “state land, on the instructions of the political echelon” by the military-run Civil Administration.  “We urge the government of Israel to reverse this decision,” a State Department official said in Washington, calling the move “counterproductive” to efforts to achieve a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians. Israel Radio said the step was taken in response to the kidnapping and killing of three Jewish teens by Hamas militants in the area in June. Tensions stoked by the incident quickly spread to Israel’s border with Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas, and the two sides engaged in a seven-week war that ended on Tuesday with an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire. More

British ‘jihadist’ mum threatens to behead Christians

SyrianTerroristFemaleA middle-aged British mother-of-two and former rock band member has joined jihadists in Syria and wants to behead Christians with a “blunt knife”, British media reported. The reports identified the woman as Sally Jones, 45, from Kent in southeast England, and said she now goes by the name Sakinah Hussain, or Umm Hussain al-Britani. Security experts estimate that hundreds of Britons have gone to the Middle East to join the Islamic State (IS) militant group, the most brutal to emerge out of Syria’s bloody civil war and the most successful. The well-funded group controls large swathes of Syria and Iraq and has proved adept at using social media to boost its profile, attract recruits and terrify enemies with images of mass executions and battlefield victories. More

Could the Latest Islamic State Move Pose a Threat to U.S. Aircraft?

When Islamic State militants seized a Syrian airbase along with its fighter jets in late August, it was unclear if the group had any trained pilots to fly the equipment. A new report suggests the group may soon have in its ranks pilots with at least a rudimentary knowledge of the aircraft. CNN Arabic reported that the Islamic State group announced via a Twitter account believed to be associated with the terror group that it is now forcing abducted Syrian air force pilots to train its jihadist fighters how to fly the planes. The pilots were captured when the group seized the Tabqa military airbase in Syria’s Raqqa Province, Al Arabiya eported. When they grabbed the government airbase, Islamic State militants took control of heavy equipment, including at least three MiG fighters, anti-aircraft missiles and tanks, according to Long War Journal, a publication that tracks jihadist groups. It’s unclear if the new equipment could pose a threat to U.S. military aircraft should the Obama administration move to strike Islamic State targets in Syria. U.S. airstrikes have been limited to the group’s positions in Iraq. More
